Leaves turning colors, crisp night air. Time to start thinking fall clothing. What better than add an alpaca scarf or two to that collection as well. I love wearing items made from my very own herd of alpacas.

I have been very busy this year getting ready for the big event at Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis Mo. called the Best of Missouri Market and More. It is held Oct 2-4. I will have many new items I have made from my beautiful herd of alpacas. I hope you can stop by and see me and my friend Barb Bailey there.

I jumped right in and went into production of a quality sock called SuriSmart, made from USA fibers. with the main fiber being USA suri alpaca fiber. I will have them for sale at my events and they are online in my store as well.

Here is my website page with my events.

If you are unable to attend an events you can shop my online store as well. http://www.breezyridgealpacas.com/store/

Now for the big NEWS!!!
I am writing a children's book!! Yes me. I am not a writer but I do have a passion to help others so the idea about putting a book about a "special" alpaca born with a birth defect that shows you how it is ok to be different. My hope is that this book with give a child confidence if they feel they are not perfect or have a birth defect. Maybe even a parent reading it to the child will gain some insight as well. I should be available early spring 2016. You can keep up with it and find out about the alpaca on her Facebook page, Serendipity the Three Legged Alpaca
Time is flying by. I have been very busy creating suri alpaca products for my Etsy shop and my shows I will be vending at.

I had a dream to create a fantastic sock made from USA Suri Alpaca fiber that will stay fit on the legs. After several months of dedicated communications back and forth I have a final product to unveil. The SuriSmart Sock. Made from USA suri alpaca as well as USA merino, nylon, and spandex to give the sock everything it needs to make it a comfortable natural fiber sock. The added merino and nylon helps to get the yarn perfect so the sock knitter can use it in the sock machine. Then I wash them all gently, lay them flat to dry and label them.
They are machine washable! That was my goal to provide a comfortable, long lasting, natural fiber sock that you can wash in the machine without shrinking.
Well after a long winter, spring is here in full force. We have one cria (baby) already, a little boy. Isn't he the cutest thing?

Then we have one more cria (baby) due any day now and one again mid June.

We are getting things ready for shearing on May 9th. Then I will have lots of fiber to skirt and get ready for the mill to process into my lace yarns and rovings for me. I leave a few fleeces here for me to play with by hand.

Be sure to go to my website and click on events to see where you will find me next. I am teaching felting classes this year at Fiber U and Ozark Fiber Fling.

I will also be vending again at the Best of Missouri Market and More at the Missouri Botanical Gardens this year. I have many new designs in store for this fall and will unveil them there. I also am working with a local merchant to carry some of my finished fashions. Stay tuned for details.

I am planning an open house for November 14th. So you can come do your Christmas shopping and visit the alpacas all in one trip.

Hope all of you are having a fabulous year and getting outdoors in the fresh sunshine. Until next time.

We noticed she was having trouble. Called a Vet and loaded her into a trailer and took her to a vet 30 miles away. She was unable to have the cria naturally. The cria was all twisted inside and impossible to get out so c section delivery it was. We had a beautiful deep dark brown boy. He was born on my grandon's birthday so we let him him the cria. He picked Moose. So I told him Moose would be his alpaca buddy.

Moose had continuous skin problems and excess foamy mouth as though he had a problem that we could not find cause. We tried everything from probiotics to teeth problems. He took very ill, the night of January 8th. The temp outside dropped drastically that night down to 4 degrees with wind chills way below 0. He started to get chilled. Was having trouble standing. I tried to keep him warm and gave him thiamine every 4 hours thinking he was low on it and was in the process of developing polio (something they get fairly easily). By early morning I started to realize it was his stomach hurting as he didn't want lay sternal. He would lay with legs out to side as though it hurt too bad to touch his stomach to ground. This is not good for a ruminant to lay on side. So I propped him with bales of hay and called every Vet I could think of and none were available to help except one an hour away. So I got him loaded with the help of family and friends and took him to the Vet. They did everything they could and he did feel better within a few hours of treatment as he was back to laying sternal with head up and even walked some. Then he suddenly passed on the morning of the 9th of January 2015.

Cause of death was sepsis from a perforated ulcer.
Perhaps because I have been so busy with all the items I've been working on for this fall/winter.

The Best of Missouri Market in which I will be vending again this year, is just 1 month away. I am really looking forward to it this year. My friend Barb Bailey of Patchwork acres will be assisting me the entire weekend. We have a good time when we are together. My booth will be stocked full of luscious, elegant suri alpaca items. I hope you can stop by if you are in the area. There is so much to see there.
All signed up and getting ready for the big Best of Missouri Market at the St. Louis botanical gardens again this fall. Such a compliment to be invited 3 years in a row. I have so many new things to have this fall.
I am in the process of getting back socks made from our very own herd this year. Can't wait to see how they turn out. This will be my big selling item this winter as everyone loves alpaca socks.
We had 2 new cria this spring and they are doing very well.
As you can see Sera (Serendipity) has a handicap but she has no clue she is any different. She is doing wonderful and is so adorable.

This is Ember. She is so cute.
Shearing was May 10th and I got busy and skirted and sorted and send to my favorite mills to be processed this year. I only kept a few for me to hand process. I just don't have the time like I used with the new designs I enjoy creating.
We will also be featuring 4 of my favorite designs at the Suri Strut Fashion Show, in Estes Park, Colorado Aug. 15th. I am really excited to do this and has been a challenge to creat 4 full fashion designs to be on the runway. There will be social media video after so I hope to post it here.
Back to work, much to get done!!!

From all of us at Breezy Ridge Alpacas Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02675153823447871928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5612725209316599763.post-43764941021998912962013-11-14T12:17:00.000-06:002013-11-14T12:17:12.332-06:00Video on making of a cowl on my PassapI am asked how I make the knit lace scarves and items that I make with suri alpaca. So when I say a knitting machine, folks are usually amazed that I made that way. So I used my cell phone to video the making of a cowl on my passap duo 80 manual knitting machine. So while it is not the best video I hope you can get the main idea of how it works.
While I never owned a knitting machine or even used a knitting loom before this one, I find it very interesting. It is a wonderful piece of equipment built very well but is also challenging to learn. It has taken me well over 5 years to master doing what I am doing in this video. The manipulation of needles can be difficult and keeping your eye on the bed, lock, and yarn tension all at the same time is a learning curve that does take lots of experience and of course many failures to remind me! PS, I even messed up and forgot the pushers and had to take off and start over during this video.
I know some hand knitters frown at the use of a machine, but I've also been complimented over and over on the items I make on it, from hand knitters. I am not skilled at hand knitting but love suri alpaca in knit designs, and I do love to hand crochet so I can turn out different kinds of items with the lovely suri alpaca fiber.

WASHING THE FIBER FIRST
I've been asked how I wash suri alpaca as well as how I card or spin it. Well for me I use plastic tubs that fit in my kitchen sink. I fill with Unicorn scour and hot water. Place approx. 1 to 1.5 lbs of locks in the tub, just pressing down to saturate. Set the tub aside and come back hours later or even next day to rinse. I then can rinse with cold water saving on my utility bills. So I fill another tub with tap water using cold water as that is the same temp now as the washing tub water. I squeeze out water from the soaked fiber and place in the rinse water. I then pull the locks apart with my hands and move around in the water gently. Fill another tub with cool water, squeeze out the fiber and place in clean water, repeating the pulling the locks apart. I repeat this rinse for 3-5 times until water is clear then I place fiber in sweater mesh bags, take to my washing machine and spin out only (no water comes into machine). Lay out to dry on sweater racks or skirting table.
CLASS I TAUGHT
I just taught a class in which I used my strauch finest drum carder and an ashford fine carder. The strauch wins for producing a fine silky batt. The ashford did a great job of opening locks and carding but the batts come out very fluffy looking, not as smooth as the strauch. More fiber stuck to the licker in drum with the ashford. I have found this is the case with all carders that I have used that have teeth and not pins on the licker in drum. The reason I don't have this with the strauch is the pins on the licker in. It helps to keep from fuzzing suri. One way to avoid this happening is to hold your locks over the large drum and let it take it gently from your fingers and avoid the licker in completely.
Here is a picture of the fiber being carded as I hold a dog slicker brush with soft teeth to help push in fiber on the large drum as you would use a burnishing tool. I hope this helps those that struggle on how to process suri alpaca. While it is a bit time consuming opening locks by hand and carding suri it can give you an awesome finished yarn for that special project you have in mind.

Now a wonderful man who made Dunkin Carders suggested one more thing to do to my Strauch carder that would make carding even easier and better. It was to take a piece of plastic flexible cutting board and cut it to fit my intake tray on the carder. Just enough that it fits just under the licker in. Strauch finest carder has a large dip under that licker in and the locks would not get opened up as they were heavy and just fell under the licker in drum. Using the flexible cutting board material, the fiber is held closer to the licker in. Card very slowly and open locks best you can with finger first then lay on the tray and it does a very nice job. Been really busy preparing for the Best of Missouri Market at the St. Louis Mo. Botanical Gardens Arts & Crafts Festival Oct 4-6. I have been on a frenzy making cute adjustable headbands, hats, fingerless mitts and gloves, shawls, scarves, vests, yarn, etc. I also will introduce the suri alpaca ruana. It is so silky soft and lovely drape sure to keep you warm on a cool day/night.

Well it sure did turn HOT! The fans are on and the freshly shorn alpacas are staying comfortable in the comfort of the barn in front of fans. The above photo is early in the morning as they head into the barn to stay cool. The photo below is how we shear them using a table and professional shearer.

I sent several of the fleeces off this year to be made into pin drafted roving. I just heard from the mill and it is at the pin drafter this week. Should be getting back to me soon. Pin drafted roving will be very close to a combed top. Actually some call it combed top.

I saved the juvenile fleeces (the first shearing of the alpaca) for me to do by hand as the mills generally don't like this type fleece as it is very fine.

I will be vending at the World Sheep Festival in Bethel, Mo this September. http://worldsheepfest.com/
I was there a few years back and have decided to hit the road again this year to see old friends and meet new ones. I will also be doing a needle felting class, called, Felt a Critter Class. In this class we will be felting a bunny rabbit with ideas on how you can use the technique to felt other critters of your choice.

I've also been working on some fiber designs to have in my booth for the Bethel sheep festival and the Missouri Botanical Gardens, Best of Missouri Market Fair, in October. http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/things-to-do/events/signature-events/best-of-missouri-market.aspx
Spring has arrived and the grass is growing faster than I can keep up with. So now more outdoor chores are keeping me from working with the fiber arts, but won't be long and it will be too hot and I'll get back to it.

I'm going to be vending at a new show this spring, The Bilderbach Art Studio, in Cape Girardeau Mo, on May17th and 18th.

The book, Savor Missouri, is now published and available for purchase. Here is a link to read more about it. http://www.missourilife.com/blogs/savor-missouri I have a few available for purchase in my studio/store. Call or email before coming though. I'm not always here.

I've been making many new designs again and get all excited as I usually do. Here is a sneak peak at just a few of them.
We had a successful year this past year and many thanks to my loyal return customers and the new customers too! Your purchases help me keep my alpacas in good quality hay and feed and help me to make more fiber items for next year. Be looking for new designs. I have many ideas floating around in this head!!
Moose (the bottle baby) is growing nicely and almost ready to be completely weaned from the bottle so when we move the cria into their own pen away from momma's to be weaned we will move him too and take away his bottle. He likes our grandson Easton. Easton named Moose, they share the same birthday.

We are looking to sell a few alpacas to make room for new breedings and new cria. I just don't have room for them all if I want to continue to breed for more. Special pricing on multiple alpacas. Just ask.

Thanks again for a wonderful 2012. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year for 2013. Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02675153823447871928noreply@blogger.com
